Pitt’s history and philosophy of science programs earned top honors in a recent report

The graduate programs in Pitt’s Department of History and Philosophy of Science have earned top rankings in the latest .

The 2024 report is based on a survey of 239 philosophers across the English-speaking world, who assessed 89 graduate programs from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

The department’s physics concentration earned a perfect score on the 5-point scale. In the general philosophy of science category, Pitt was rated a 4.5. The department’s programs in biology as well as cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences each earned a 4.0.

The University’s Department of History and Philosophy of Science offers graduate and undergraduate programs that explore science’s foundations, methods and implications by integrating perspectives from history, philosophy and the natural and social sciences.
