The Â鶹´«Ã½ expanded its sustainability efforts and offerings last month by installing two outdoor solar tables on Posvar Patio.

The tables use solar energy to power ports where students can charge their laptops, phones and other electronic devices. The  and the  funded the project, which was spearheaded by four students.

Greta Engel, Christy Kim, Diana James and Carly Zaborowski developed the idea while they were enrolled in Ward Allebach's spring 2022 Geology 1333: Sustainability course, which has resulted in other successful student projects such as the Relearn Our Land initiative.

Allebach, an instructor in the Department of Geology and Environmental Science, said student interest in solar tables has been around for years.

"These stations show that the University is committed to sustainability concepts," he said. "These tables give [students] a place outdoors to study and recharge their devices. It's a practical and a visual reminder for everyone that the University is committed to sustainability."

The stations are available for use and sit adjacent to three pollinator garden beds Allebach's students have planted over the years.
