The Kenneth P. Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ of Arts and Sciences and College of General Studies each launched three new undergraduate award categories to acknowledge outstanding seniors in their schools. These students have demonstrated academic excellence, exemplified resilience in their academic and personal pursuits and displayed a substantial commitment to service by assisting their peers or the greater Pittsburgh community.
A reception for the 19 winners was held April 13 at the University Club. Student successes include undergraduate research, peer tutoring and mentoring, socio-political involvement in LGBTQ+ activism, and nontraditional and continued educational goals.
Here are the winners of the inaugural awards.
Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ awardees
The Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ Dean’s Scholar Award recognizes seniors who exemplify high scholarship, character and devotion to the ideals of the Â鶹´«Ã½. Five students received this award:
- Maja Lynn, anthropology and museum studies
- Michael Barth, physics and astronomy and Russian
- Mark Farino, mathematics and physicsÌý
- Gavyn Marincheck, environmental studies and history and philosophy of science
- Emily Jolly, biological sciences
The Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ Perseverance Award recognizes seniors who have overcome barriers and shown the strength of character and resiliency in all pursuits. The winners are:
- Madison Faizon, Africana studies and history
- Justina Adams, microbiology
- Beck Alvarez, ecology and evolution
Lastly, the Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ Service Award recognizes the extraordinary impact seniors have on the success of their peers, the school and the broader community. Six students received this award:
- Tyler Viljaste, politics, philosophy and business administration
- Emma Krofcheck, anthropology and physics and astronomy
- Taylor Tomlinson, chemistry and sociology
- Emily Kelley, chemistry
- Madison Brewer, astronomy and English writing
- Barrie Wiener, French, politics and philosophy
College of General Studies awardees
The College of General Studies Student of the Year Award serves to recognize seniors who exemplify high scholarship, character and devotion to the ideals of the Â鶹´«Ã½. This year’s winner is Andrea Adamousky, who studied health services and natural science.
The College of General Studies Perseverance Award recognizes seniors who have overcome barriers and shown the strength of character and resiliency in all pursuits. Two students received this award:
- Raymond Rogerson, social sciences
- Jenna Lindsay, Administration of justice, psychology (graduated December 2021)
The College of General Studies Service Award recognizes the extraordinary impact seniors have on the success of their peers and within the greater Pittsburgh community. Two students received this award:Ìý
- Bridgette Gerber-Winschel, legal studies
- Murali Kovvur, natural sciences
