8 Pitt students were named Gilman scholars

Eight Â鶹´«Ã½ students were named to the U.S. Department of State’s . Seven are from the Pittsburgh campus and one is from the Â鶹´«Ã½ at Greensburg.

As part of its mission, the Gilman Program seeks to expand the U.S. student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates receiving Federal Pell Grants with up to $5,000 during their study abroad experience.

The Pittsburgh campus’ March 2024 winners and their destinations are:

  • Zain Adamo, a sophomore in the Kenneth P. Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ of Arts and Sciences majoring in film and media studies (United Kingdom)
  • Madison Dougherty, a junior in the Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ and David C. Frederick Honors College studying biological sciences (United Kingdom)
  • Mackenzie Evans, a junior in the Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ (Tanzania)
  • Eithne Maro, a junior in the Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ majoring in classics and philosophy (Germany)
  • Norah Phillips-Pinkney, a sophomore in the College of Business Administration majoring in business information systems (South Korea)
  • Nicholas Pho, a junior in the Swanson Â鶹´«Ã½ of Engineering studying bioengineering (South Africa)
  • Valeria Silva Yepez, a senior in the Dietrich Â鶹´«Ã½ studying psychology and Spanish (Brazil)

Pitt-Greensburg’s March 2024 Gilman scholar is:

  • Madison Vogel, a senior majoring in psychology with a focus on clinical counseling and minoring in criminal justice and theatre arts (Italy)

The David C. Frederick Honors College’sÌýÌýrecruits and supports Gilman recipients through each step of the extensive scholarship application process. All students at Pitt can take advantage of services provided by the national fellowships advisors, which include offering expert feedback on application essays, coaching through mock interviews and networking with faculty who can provide applicants with effective recommendation letters.
