Students cautioned on South Side crime

As students return to campus in large numbers, Pitt Public Safety and Student Affairs are urging them to show caution in light of recent increases in violent crime in some parts of Pittsburgh. Specifically, Pittsburgh鈥檚 South Side neighborhood, home to many popular restaurants and bars, has seen a number of incidents in recent months, particularly during the late-night hours.

In light of those concerns, Pitt Police recently听:听

鈥淎s students return for the fall semester, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management wants to be sure students are aware of the recent violent criminal activity, road closures and increased police presence in the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh. In several cases the violence has involved firearms. Therefore, while the City of Pittsburgh Police work diligently and coordinate efforts to help solve these issues, students are discouraged from participating in nightlife activities in that neighborhood.鈥

Student Affairs officials reiterated the safety messaging on听听and in orientation week discussions. 鈥淎lways use common sense when exploring the city or a new area,鈥 was the clear message delivered to incoming first-year students.
